Only last year? I’ve been avoiding them for a long time. You can almost always find a “thing.com” store that sells just the thing I need and the blurb is written by someone independent who knows the subject and can tell me why or why not it is worth spending money on the more expensive version.

See a qualified forester for the specific area. There are many different forests and they have different needs so no universal statement can be made.

Most of the forests in north America need regular fires and have been harmed by centuries of white men putting them out. However that means centuries of overgrowth and so starting one now is a too hot fire that isn’t helpful either. The great plains need to burn yearly as well.

A proper fire should leave lots of charcoal behind that gets beat into the soil and naturally permanently sequesters tons of carbon. So this is a factor in global warming.

The problem is a few people have money for lawyers and anytime an expert proposes a fire they get a judge to issue an injunction and stop it until it is too late to safely burn. I’m not sure what to do about this but it is something to oppose.

I used to live not far from there, in Monticello. Everybody knew there was nuclear power plant in town, but most people when asked where it was pointed to the coal plant in this story which a couple towns away.

What would you think about learning Pascal, or Ada instead of C? They are also low enough to be useful to explain everything, but have more guard rails. (and without being the latest fad that Rust is)

It was ludicrously inefficient and unsustainable. However it worked and scaled up. The process is still used today to make synthetic oil from natural gas. Any source of carbon can be used, coal is what Germany had.

Germany scaled the process up to nearly all their fuel needs in WWII.

We have known how to make biopetro for many years. The process Germany used to turn coal into petrol in WWII works just find using biological sources of carbon instead of coal. These days we use that process for synthetic motor oil. Once in a while a race car will use it to get the perfect molecules for their needs (more energy per unit)

In all cases the problem is the cost of fuel is around 5x what pumped crude costs so you would only use it when some thing other than cost is most important.

The real question is can they make this more coat effective?
