  • The thing about automated encrypted drive unlock is that you are missing kernel check pcr (8 or 9 I don’t remember) and without that anyone can boot with compromised kernel and unlock your drive. Which makes encryption kind of pointless. The same pcr, however, means that you have to rebind after every kernel update (which is quite often on many distros). The disadvantage is that with current state of the software handling auto unlock on Linux is kinda flaky and rebinding may involve more than one restart. I eventually realized that it’s less trouble to just skip this altogether and enter the password every time and then set autologin.

  • The permissions have to be justified when uploading to flathub (via PR) and the exceptions are not always accepted. Flatpaks ARE safer than system packages and if you think otherwise I recommend you taking a look who can access all passwords on the keyring and who doesn’t. (Getting such exception on flarhub is very hard). Flatpak 2.0 hopefully gets user approvals for permissions. But still with current flatpak you have the option to reject permission via flatseal.

  • Oh yeah, we also have a wall calendar with my wife. But personally I use digital calendar.

Its not as messy for me, but took time to come up with something that works for me. The three categories are intentional. “Next” are basically simple tasks that can be done at once (but take more than a few mins), added after planning, so that doesn’t really change once they are added (and I just tick what is done). In progress, pretty similar, but longer term tasks (maybe not perfect name for the category). I usually keep a section under the task based on how much I expect sub-tasks or notes. And inbox, well its just add all, plan later list. When something moves to next or in progress or is done immediately I just tick it in inbox. In inbox I have 3 types of tick-boxes. Square ones - if I expect a task to be doable fast without moving it anywhere (in GTD those are the under 2 minutes tasks). Then round one for tasks that need to be added to next. And triangle for tasks that will be longer-term tasks and need to be added to the in-progress section once I decide to do them.

  • I have been looking for a good to-do ecosystem for so long that I ended up with pen and paper. Hear me out. I bought very nice a6 paper notebook and very comfortable ball pen an I just enjoy having this one non-digital, offline thing. After years of not writing with pen and doing most of my life management digitally, having this one thing this way… It’s hard to explain but I enjoy. I even try to write with nice joined-up writing, because it’s not like in school when I had to write a lot fast. No, every to-do is a few words or a sentence and thus I can take time and write nicely. At the beginning of the notebook I have next todos section, in the middle I have in progress long term todos and at the back I have inbox.

  • I humbly disagree with others that 16 Gigz of ram is not enough. A. For the first server it is definitely enough, before you know what you really need. B. In current rampocalypse it would be crazy buying ram without knowing that you really need it (only for it to sit there unused later). Your setup is fine and only time and your inner hobbyist selfhoster will tell later what you need.

Edit: and fyi I curretly do have 48 Gigz 😂, bought it a year ago very cheap and my system uses 10. Therefore I have set a high ARC to 16 GB. I used to try local LLM but didn’t find it useful for the high power consumption. Just wanted to show you where my opinion come from. Nowadays I wouldn’t buy more than strictly necessary.
