I was gonna mention docker because I have a feeling it was created partly just to solve this issue, but it really only works for CLI tools and not GUI ones, so I decided against it.
Docker is a bit of a overkill solution but tbf it works really well.
I don’t know where my Linux journey takes me next yet, but I only half way agree with this post. Arch is not quite as bad as this post makes it out to be, but there’s definitely always a bit of russian roulette involved in whether your system boots tomorrow or not (most of the time it does).
I just had my EndeavourOS (which is just a thin layer on top of Arch) kill itself and some weird-ass hyperspecific flags in the initrd build process brought it back to life.
Tho in the ~10 years of using arch now I’d say it was still preferable to the extremely stable experience, and I don’t think recommending Debian Stable is such a good idea either.
Yeah I could unfuck my EOS system with a bit of trickery, but once you get a good franken debian going, when that thing breaks there’s no rescue.
I’ve had some stuff on Arch break after an upgrade too because some config variable names changed. I rember when I had KDE with i3 going and one day the desktop was gone. Was just because the variable names in KDE had changed and a quick i3 config change was all that was needed.
Having to selectively install packages from other sources because the main repo will keep you on a too outdated version for 6 months is just not a viable idea in today’s world.
There are luckily more than just these 2 options.
honestly idk how much of a diff it makes and I really don’t care. I wholeheartedly disagree that it’s a massive win if the system catches a few cheaters if the system is designed around “guilty until proven innocent”.
It’s absolutely possible to design a game in a way that makes cheating basically impossible or severely nerfs it without an anti-cheat. And even if you didn’t want to do that, the fact that dedicated servers have become a incredibly rare sight also contributes to this issue.
It’s all for the bottom line. Spend as little time in development as possible and extract as much money from players as possible, at all costs.

Yup, as happened during my most recent linux suicide, dracut just waits infinitely for a device to mount (tho it drops into a emerg shell after like 3 mins or so).
Anti cheat will always be bypassed. BF6, requiring secure boot, had cheats during the open beta. And this will always be true due to the nature of how computers work. You would need to have a dedicated computing device that does nothing but play a specific game in order to ensure cheating isn’t possible; think tamagochi but for league of legends.
Idk if this is a hot take but „no limit“ should straight up not exist. Just set a limit and blow the whole PC up when it takes too long.
idk but there’s probably dozens of those. I don’t know what Rito are thinking and I kinda don’t want to. Intrusive anti cheat doesn’t work but those companies don’t care. Unfortunately, in the rat race between cheaters and anti cheat devs, actually developing a game solidly such that cheating is basically impossible has not been thought of yet. I also suspect “”“”““micro””“”“” transactions are a major driving factor here.
The problem is that games like LoL or Valorant are kinda made so that you “need” to have a dedicated LoL PC. You’re not supposed to install these games on your main PC. Because these games are so highly competitive with real cash prizes involved, the devs ask for more control over your PC than typical games. It’s not a Windows vs Linux thing, it’s about control.
I’m not condoning this practice but it helps to understand why the situation is like this.
Well I can still access all the data from a live usb so I already backed up the most important stuff.
I did all that and more already. That’s why I ultimately gave up. It’s rare that I can’t fix a Linux issue, but this is one of those rare cases.

Nah it’s fine. Basically grub can see the SSD where the kernel lies and boot the kernel, then the kernel can’t see the drive its on anymore
Honestly this is just a me thing with my brain. I have VERY high PC setup inertia. If my system’s running, I’ll keep it that way. And if there’s a problem (like my current Linux being actually fucked), first reflex is to get a panic attack.
Was probably wrong of me to generalize my inertia here especially in the Linux community so I’ll apologize for that.
Yeah I meant the effort required to change a already running distro to use something other than systemd seems too daunting. ofc if you have the luxury to reinstall a fresh distro its very easy
