Technology@lemmy.world•Retailers are pulling back from self-checkout after years of theft, errors, and questionable time savingsEnglish
1·9 days agoIs it possible there are less businesses doing it because many companies have already done it? I know a lot of people aren’t in favour of self-checkouts, but decisions go to where the money and convenience are. We don’t go to tellers or the few gas stations that serve because of convenience. We troubleshot our computers and do our own renovations because hiring workers would be too expensive. If you don’t like self-checkouts, don’t use them. It’s as easy as that.

Technology@lemmy.world•Retailers are pulling back from self-checkout after years of theft, errors, and questionable time savingsEnglish
7·10 days agoWhat country is this? They seem to becoming more prevalent here. (Canada) My observation is that people generally look at the cashier lines. If there’s too long a wait, they head for the self-checkout. Or, if they only have a few items, they head to the self-checkout.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL Claude Emile Jean-Baptiste Litre was invented so the short form of the litre could be capitalized.English
1·13 days agoFrom what I understand, a unit shouldn’t be capitalized unless it’s named after someone. The problem with litre is that a lowercase l looks like a 1 which can really mess up a measurement. People started using uppercase, but some purists bucked the trend. That’s when Claude Emile was made up. Because some journals thought it was true, more people got convinced to use the uppercase L for Litre.
