The truck I drove as a teenager had a gas gauge that only worked if I’d recently hit a hard bump. It would stop working again after 5 or 10 minutes. It had to have been caused by a loose connection somewhere, but we never did find it. I’d just hit a pothole every so often when I wanted to know how much gas I had.
It had other issues as well. The speedometer was only correct right at 32 mph. It read low at higher speeds, and high at lower speeds. The roof was chopped all the way across to make a sun roof, and leaked horribly around the seals. The chop job also meant that the frame flexed very noticeably whenever I went over a bump. None of this was our fault, I’d like to point out. It had all of these issues, and more besides, when my parents bought it from the idiots who owned it before.
