Are there any copyleft/open source projects that you would recommend contributing to? Are there any projects that directly support leftist causes/goals? (Ex: Housing, Climate Change, Prison Abolition, Unions/Co-ops, Anti-🧊, Mutual Aid, etc.) This is not an exhaustive list at all.
The GNU Hurd. Keep laughing, it will get there.
Edit: instead of outright promoting the GNU Hurd, I will give my reasons.
-
The architecture of the Hurd is very scalable compared to other kernels. It does not need much rewriting to adapt to modern technology. Rewriting the Hurd in rust is much easier than other kernels.
-
It is a GNU project so if it does succeed, we can spread the Free software philosophy to others. It also means that corpo’s cannot influence it.
-
It is GPLv2 or later, so that is nice to have.
-
It holds all the benefits of a microkernel.
There is probably more, but they are not as important to me personally.
I think the rewrite on rust will depend on gccrs becoming more mature which will take some time
Check this out. The Hurd is just a collection of translators, which are kinda like fuse. https://gitlab.com/AlmuHS/hurd-translator-in-rust

Accessibility direly needs more volunteer work in almost all projects. So you could, for example, pick your favorite desktop and get involved in their accessibility efforts (e.g. start here for KDE).
Ask your local political party (or union) and volunteer for tech stuff for them.
Ask what they use, contribute to that. Or if they use something bad, suggest something good to them, then work on that.
All of those organizations are well known to use a Fascist software stack of closed source enshittified products.
Ask your local political party (or union) and volunteer for tech stuff for them.
it’s alarming how little this seem to know and i know that i’m not the right one to teach them.
