I would just like to point out this is my biggest gripe with the movie.
Josh Brolin didn’t sacrifice the thing he most cared about. What he most cared about was his plan to kill half the universe. That’s what he should have sacrificed to get the wishstone. Instead, he iced a perfectly innocent person that wasn’t even hard for him to do.
If you would sacrifice your most cared about thing for the stone, the soul stone would be more cared about (and the thing you are planning to do with it), meaning no one can get the stone
That’s always been my thought. “you must sacrifice something you love” and the whole reason Gamorrah was laughing is because she believed Thanos had no love of anything or anyone.
And of course something like that can’t be exactly quantified in scientific terms, so the stone would have to go off whatever the person considers love. So I do believe that Thanos loved her and nebula, but I also don’t think his version of what he considers love to be comparable to most other living beings.
An ancient race that never lies writes a legend: “This relic will allow one to undo any mistake in history. All it requires is a true sacrifice.”
They define true sacrifice as giving up that which you value most. They define what you value as something you’d protect above all else. This race never had any time travel research; they just presented this concept of “true sacrifice” as a joke and a thought exercise.

I think it was just something they loved rather than something they loved the most.
I don’t think Natasha and Clint’s one would work as well because Clint would have had to lose his wife or children or something.
