It’s not ready yet but there’s the ladybird project that has a lot of promise. I appreciate FF a lot but their code base is a mess, they need a modern rewrite of their browser engine. That’s why we’re getting all these chromium based browsers, it’s just a better base to build off of.
From their own monthly updates where they compared their progress with other browsers Servo also seemed to be coming along nicely, although for now it seems to be just a browser engine and not an actual browser.
Sooner is better then latter because they’re already losing the adoption war. An internet where web developers write their sites for chromium specifically is a bad situation and it’s happening slowly. FF needs more adoption and spins who can fit niches they don’t. FF spins just haven’t been as successful as chromium spins so far. Like waterfox vs brave.
First IronFox, then LibreWolf and now ladybird… a definitive alternative to FF for at least 5 years would be nice…
I’m not saying taking gecko and modifying it is impossible, just far less pleasant than taking blink/V8. Ladybird is interesting because it’s a completely independent project from chromium or FF with some really nice ideas. I hope to see it succeed but seems to be moving a little too slowly as a project to be a serious contender. That’s all to say it’s far easier to make chromium based browsers than FF based browsers. FF has needed a rewrite for like a decade already.
