The surprise here is that it was solar.

Portugal has generated between 45% - 80% of its power from renewables every year for years now, but it’s usually mainly hydro-generation (hence the big percentage spread - it’s much less in drought years than non-drought one) since the countries has for over a half a century invested in dams for it.

Also there was a lot of investment in wind generation since 2 or 3 decades ago, which is now around 15% of all power generation.

The growth in solar is more recent (surprisingly, for the country were at least the capital is the city with the most hours of cloudless sunlight in Europe).

That “renewable sources accounted for 53% of consumption” is actually low and is probably because the water level in rivers is down.
