Man, I feel for these guys. High-quality content is time consuming to research and produce, and website creation in particular has been low-hanging fruit for LLMs for a couple of years. It would infuriate me to know that I just came up with a cool trick or insightful workflow improvement that was immediately going to be sucked into a trillion-dollar plagiarism machine.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Can anyone suggest any self-built Apple TV alternativesEnglish
7·4 days agoIt may be circumstantial but I just checked and Netflix and Disney+ are both only rendering at 720p in Linux (Kubuntu 26.04) in Firefox and Chromium for me. Maybe official chrome is better, I don’t have it installed at the moment.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Can anyone suggest any self-built Apple TV alternativesEnglish
24·5 days agoThe trouble you’ll quickly run into is that with a non-iOS/Android/Windows platform your streaming sites won’t go above 720p, and your attempts to run sandboxed Android apps will pretty much all fail. Now if all you mainly do is serve local content from e.g. Jellyfin that’s not much of a problem, but as you already own an AppleTV that’s probably not your only use case.

Technology@lemmy.world•SpaceX no longer needs NASA, and that’s a problem for America’s space agency: “NASA desperately needs SpaceX, and SpaceX knows it, and Elon knows it.”English
1193·5 days agoRevoke launch licenses until NASA gets what they need. Export ban on company and tech. Nationalize launch assets if absolutely necessary. Or at least threaten these things. SpaceX needs starlink, the kind of AI revenue they’d otherwise need is never going to materialize. Force them to play ball.

53·6 days agoMy grandparents lived near an estuary and had to put the dot stickers on their big, west-facing sliding glass doors to stop the high-speed waterfowl crashes that would happen every month or so. While I certainly understand it’s best for the ducks, one of my oldest memories is of hearing a BANG! And looking out the door to see a disoriented duck staggering around on the deck before shaking it off and flying away unsteadily.

science@lemmy.world•China picks first researchers for 15-year mega grantsEnglish
5·14 days agoI’m really interested in seeing how this turns out. Multi-year federal grants in the US almost always have to be re-applied for every year, and are almost never guaranteed past 1 year (and are subject to budget cuts). So on the one hand, you could argue that a multi year budget could make projects prone to being too expensive or full of unnecessary stuff, but on the other hand, you have to wonder how much innovation and discovery we’ve lost by having our brightest minds spend so much time reapplying for grants every year.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about the new word "zuzai", meaning "uses zero artificial intelligence"English
0·1 month agospam. slop. enshittification. we’ve had plenty of words enter everyday vocabulary. they all had to start somewhere (granted enshittification in particular is pretty easy to grasp without ever having seen it before).

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about the new word "zuzai", meaning "uses zero artificial intelligence"English
0·1 month agoIt’s about framing. By saying “no AI” you’re acknowledging that the default selection is “AI”. By making a word for it you’re putting both concepts back on equal footing. That’s how I think about it at least.

So they took out two of the most useful things that LLMs can do.
